Olly Olly Oxen Free: Enlightenment

The title of this article may not be known to many people. The origin of Olly Olly Oxen Free is considered to have been around four hundred years ago. The term used then was “All ye come out in free”. This was used by children that played games of “Tag” or “Hide and Seek”. Eventually the original phrase changed to Olly Olly Oxen Free. Many people suggest that the modern phrase came from the German language version of this title: “Alle alle auch sind frei”. There are some that say the newer version is a mutation of older versions such as “All ye, all ye outs in free” or All ye, all ye all the outs in free” I am sure you are asking yourself why I would wish to write to you about this children’s catchphrase.

There are several considerations we can make relating to this phase, spirituality and awareness (salvation). Olly Olly Oxen free is an ideal sign post for us to focus on in our understanding of going beyond words, conditioned thoughts and emotions.

Human beings have been searching for paradise (salvation) since the beginning of self-awareness (consciousness). The search for freedom has been very complex when compared to a child’s game. Reaching enlightenment can however be as easy as shouting out the phrase: Olly Olly Oxen free. The mind can not be blamed for our predicament. The mind does what it does. It does this very proficiently. We still inevitably make such statements as “What was I thinking?”, “My brain is dead.” or “My brain has a cramp”.

Olly Olly Oxen Free: Now You Can Be

What could we consider to be the leading complexity that restricts the experience of enlightenment? One factor might be that human beings become their thoughts and emotions in almost every situation. This is due to conditioned behavior. Emotionally sensitive people have a tendency to be more susceptible to this behavior pattern but reacting unconsciously is typical in all human beings. How can a person mentally go beyond this repetitive response pattern? This can be done by not experiencing a person, thing or situation “mentally”. This may sound like I wish to trick you; but I assure you that it is not a trick.


This can be done by practicing “going beyond” the thoughts and emotions. Thoughts will always be a part of our existence. This is also true for emotions. We can accept this and then go beyond these restrictive elements. This means not getting involved in what the mind processes or feels. A person can do this through a practice of releasing any thought or emotion as it happens.  This may sound impossible but it is obtainable through a process that first involves focusing on any given thought or emotion. “What did I just say?” Yes, I realize that I first suggested “going beyond” a thought or emotion. Now I am suggesting that we “focus” on thoughts and emotions. Please let me explain.


This type of focusing requires practice. Here we are speaking about a shift in awareness. Awareness remains but the energy is redirected to mentally stepping outside the moment; thus you become the moment itself. This allows a virtual mental space to suddenly appear. You will realize; with practice, that you are neither a thought nor an emotion. You can observe the thoughts or emotions without complicating them through attachment. It is attachment that causes confusing and complexity. The next time you become aware of awareness simply say: Olly Olly Oxen free (all ye come out in free). You will then remember how it feels to be unattached. This mantra can be used to verify your release from thoughts and emotions. Enlightenment has begun.
