Wanting and Demanding

Have you every considered the excessive human behavior of wanting and demanding? Why are we so dissatisfied? The content existence of humankind appears to offer us so much “content”; yet most people seem so discontent. The word “discontent” may spark some topics for discussion. Dictionary com defines discontent (adjective) as “not content; dissatisfied; discontented.”

One synonym of “discontent” is resentment. Resentment is defined as (noun) “bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. Why are we repeated demanding something new or something different in our existence? Is it because we think people, situations, human existence in general and even life are treating us unfairly or cruelly? It is a difficult topic to discuss. I have written recent articles relating to the development of wanting and demanding. There is also an unquenchable need to search for something, anything that might satisfy the unhappiness that seems to thrive from our discontentment like a parasite.

I have included a poem below that was in the original manuscript of my first book (One Moment in Life). There were a total of seven in the manuscript. The final draft has two poems; one at the beginning of the book and one at the end.

Life is without Demands

Many would say that there is an actual need.
Is this so true?
Do you or I really need?
If so, what do you or I need?
Everywhere I look, there seems to be a wanting;
nothing less than an actual demanding.
Wanting is followed by demanding, it would seem.

How could this be?

The children so young, still others somewhat grown.
Age, size or shape really does not matter.
There is mostly dissatisfaction in everyone.
Some claim to need;
most simply want.
In the rich and in the poor…
it really does not matter who you are… there it is;
give me this or give me that.
Why is this, we may ask… quite naturally so?
The apparent needing, this costly wanting …
this obsessive demanding…
is a fever found only in humankind!

It is a sickness to be true.
It began in the mind, pushed on through time.
The cure, I feel, is known… but seldom to be found.
It was lost long ago; why, no one knows.
The cure is no secret.
It was there from the start.
Look simply to what can be found in life.
There is the key.
We are the gift of life.
Not this existence consisting of you or me.
I speak of true life in its entirety.
Life is more than enough for you or me.
Just let life be and you will see.
Life in its oneness…
will set you free.

Best wishes to all
